Why is it a large sum?
The numerator of chemical character of the water containing heavy hydrogen is completely the same as that of the numerator of ordinary water. It is impossible to separate light water and heavy water chemically. However, heavy hydrogen has twice as many weight as this as compared with an ordinary hydrogen numerator. Physical character is different a little. Especially in the boiling point, light water of heavy water is 101.43 degrees to 100 degrees. Heavy water will be hard to be boiled slightly compared with light water. Moreover, also in electrolysis, heavy water has the character which is hard to be electrolyzed. It is enabled to separate light water and heavy water using this character. However, in electrolysis, it is necessary to repeat the work many times to manufacture the light water with high purity. Therefore, you have to consume very big electric power. In the method of distilling and manufacturing water, there is only the method of distilling many times and repeating concentration. Expense [ large amount for that purpose ], much quantity of heat, and a huge factory are needed. In present Japan, 2 billion yen or more need to be invested in equipment. The cost per 1l. of light water still changes to 200,000 yen or more. This is not a realistic number. Now, it cannot manufacture in Japan.

At present, it has imported from overseas (Hungary, Rumania). However, since much water is very heavy, it requires huge import cost. Moreover, in order to guarantee purity, the cooperation with a third person inspection organization is surely required.

About the difference between light water and heavy water

Most is made of ordinary hydrogen and ordinary oxygen although the numerator which is making water is made of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. An atom called the heavy hydrogen with which weight is different is contained slightly. Therefore, in water, water (heavy water) heavier than this is slightly contained in addition to usual water H2O. Both are calling "heavy water" the heavy water which combined usual water with "light water" and heavy hydrogen. It is D2O into which hydrogen D (heavy hydrogen) which has twice as many mass as this rather than this went instead of ordinary hydrogen atom H. Heavy water means D2O.

(Difference between chemical character, light water, and heavy water)
Although a difference is in physical character a little in light water, usual water, and heavy water D2O, it is transparent and colorless seemingly, and the same is almost said of a refractive index, and it almost has almost no change. There is almost no difference seemingly. There is no difference also in the character as chemical character and chemical reactivity, or solvent. Heavy water is used in order to absorb a neutron in a nuclear power plant.
